AFTER HOURS: Got another good day in on my 40

After a little trial and error, we realized that great repair panel had the fender warped pretty bad.
We decided we needed to fix the repair before we went any further with attaching the lower end of the fender.

Susi is cutting out the patch panel from the old fender
I am test fitting the patch and marking the trims for Susi
Getting things trimmed out and making the patch fit.
So here it is, we have a little more finessing and I can start welding it in.

Pretty decent fit considering what we started with

SHOP UPDATE: sanding and buffing

There is Susi wet sanding one of the fenders for Bill's roadster
I finished buffing 2 of the fenders today. @ more to go tomorrow and all fenders are done.

AFTER HOURS : Put in a good day on my 40

So, the new running boards finally came in. Look great, lets get them on!
Passenger side fits great with plenty of hole elongation.
Drivers side. "Houston we have a problem" There was quite a mismatch between the fender and running board.
Its pretty obvious whats going on here. The 1/2 " thickness we are missing on the outer edge is on the flange that is rolled underneath.

Quite a difference between the 2 boards. Unfortunately, the company that made them doesnt feel they should do anything about it.
Susi and I decided we weren't going to live with the difference so we got to work. We flattened out the flange half way back on the running board.

We mounted the running board back on the truck and I got after it with a hammer and dolly. I rolled the board under a half inch lower than the previous roll.

here is the finished product. Looks much better and lines up with the fender a lot better. This, we can live with
Next project, rear fenders. These rear fenders looked pretty good laying on the ground. As soon as e put them on the truck we realized we had some issues. We decided to make some hybrid fenders. We are blending a pair of 47 pickup fenders to the bottoms of the 40 fenders. this will also eliminate the bubble for the spare tire.

This is the 47 fender, its almost the same fender except where it mounts to the running board.

The plan. Cut the bottom of the 40 fender off and graft it to the 47 fender. Sounds easy.
Here are the 2 pieces cut and ready to be welded together. There is some mismatch but a good pie cut and I should be able to get them together.
Once attached, I will cut a patch out of the old fender to replace the poorly repaired area of the fender.

SHOP UPDATE: Painting the roadster, one piece at a time

There is Susi wet sanding fenders getting them ready to paint.

We sprayed the inside of the fenders with 3M chip guard to help protect the paint from chips. This car is a driver. It will be all over Montana and possibly California so rock chips are an issue. This should help keep things clean.

These are the finished product, all fenders are painted inside and should be completed this week.
We did a double cowl lace, we were having issues lining up the hood because it was sitting very low. The second cowl lace helps support the hood and lined it right up.

I had to re-work the grill surround to get the insert to fit. It was quite a job opening it up. It will require a little body work but I am really happy with the fit so now we can move on with the paint process.

Really pleased with the fit of the hood now. The gaps are straight and even. Time to break it down and get on with painting the panels.
